تدور أحداث الرواية في بروكلين في أوائل القرن العشرين وتحكي قصة روجر ميفلين، الذي يمتلك متجرا لبيع الكتب المستعملة. بعد زيارة من أوبري جيلبرت المعلن، تبدأ أشياء غامضة في الحدوث داخل المتجر وحوله. تختفي الكتب وتظهر مرة أخرى، ويتعرض جيلبرت للهجوم، وتظهر شخصيات مشبوهة تتسكع في متجر الكتب. يعتقد جيلبرت أن ميفلين يخطط لاختطاف مساعدته الشابة تيتانيا، فينطلق لحمايتها.
