Our Safavid Indigo design depicts a filigree leather pattern incorporating handmade motifs, whilst retaining the elegance and style of the Islamic Golden Age, even in our modern context. Originally offered in a classic brown leather model, this new darker look pays homage to the darkest tone of Persian blue. This indigo hue was a popular color used in art and architecture of the Artistic period.
Associated with this era of artistic excellence, the Safavid models in the Persian style represented an important point in the art of the book. These bindings often feature designs in the center in the form of medallions, quadrants, plants and animals, pentagonal flap closures and meticulously decorated "linings" (inner covers), as well as beautiful creations in cut leather, colored papers and gilding. And above all, symmetry is the signature of this style. The adhesive originally used for this particular design uses reddish brown goatskin, real gold, lacquer and paint to achieve a creative balance.
Dating from the 17th century , this work originates from the rich craft tradition that Shah Abbas the Great, the Fifth Shah of the Safavid dynasty, inspired during what became known as the Islamic Golden Age of Art ( 750 throughout the 16th century ). He recognized the commercial benefits in promoting the arts and, therefore, the thriving trades of tiling, pottery and textiles. Illuminated manuscripts also became a thriving industry and much attention was paid to the art of bookbinding and design.
Although the reign of the Safavids ended in 1736, they left a very great legacy in reviving and establishing Persia as an economic and artistic stronghold. Among the many gems of this ancient period and culture, decorative binding shines most particularly and it is a great honor to bring back our Safavid series to everyday life.
